Victoria - Seattle

Op Vancouver Island staat augustus bekend as Fogust.

We eten “Oh my Cod, Fish & Chips”.

Thursday morning the 25th Jan carries the suitcases to the garage while Bernie makes breakfast and I lay the table Dawn is doing all kinds of little things that need to be done. After saying goodbye to neighbour Jean we leave Citadel Place around 9:30 am. We drop Dawn at the library and Bernie gets us to Downtown Victoria past the Dutch Clock tower and Parliament. He drops us off at the Victoria Clipper Pier and we say goodbye to him to. He was a great driver and guide during our visit. We get rid of our bags easily and have to wait for emigration, or immigration as you enter the US here. It costs USD 6 per person. We don’t know what that is for, but that’s one of those things. We can board almost immediately as we are in group 1. We have a big choice in places to sit. The weather is still good after being away from home for almost two weeks, we haven’t had a bad day yet. We did not think Fogust is s good name for August as we saw no fog too. We are on starboard sit and can recognize the complex where we were easily above and a little left to the big yellow patch. The boat trip takes 2 hours and 45 minutes. We find the lighthouses along the stretch, the first is the new lighthouse on Triangle Island (east Vancouver Island - we saw the old relocated one in Sooke). After arrival in Seattle we have to pick up our bags. You are not allowed to go back, so if you miss one, you have to tell the man at the end and then they’ll help you. Customs no problem, a taxi is easy and around three we arrive at Hyatt House Seattle Downton. Kitchen Studio 614 is lovely with two big beds, a nice bathroom, sitting area and a kitchen with a high table with lots op points to plug your computer or camera in. We eat at the hotel.

Friday the 26th we sleep in and have a good complimentary breakfast. We walk a few blocks to get acquainted with the neighbourhood and do a few little errands. Temperature is rising gain. We check with reception how to get to Lake Union and they tell us, they can take us there by shuttle and we get a suggestion for a place to lunch. We go to Duke’s Chowder House. We both have “Oh my Cod, Fish & Chips”; it’s real nice. The first time we stayed here with Tauck, we went on a water plane, the second time we took a boat ride on Lake Union and now we have lunch here. We phone the hotel and the shuttle picks us up; back at the hotel around 2:15 pm. After dinner we have the sunset on the roof of the hotel with sight of the Space Needle.

It is much cooler and overcast when we get up on Saturday August 27th. After breakfast we cross the road to visit Space Needle on two tickets friendly people from Southern California gave us. They hadn’t used them and were leaving. Saved us 44 USD total (senior entry price for two), not too bad! We ride up in 42 seconds and enjoy the views. We see three cruise ships in. Norwegian Jewel is on Pier 66 and pier 91 has Crown Princess and a Holland America ship we can’t read the name of because the big Princess ship is blocking t. We get a free picture via email. Back down we cross back to the hotel and ask if the shuttle can get us t Pike Place Market. That works as it is just leaving with an almost full load. Pike Place Market is as crowded as ever (and more is you ask me), but also colourful. We look around take pictures and try to find a place for lunch. Lots of people are queuing for chowder but we find Steelhead Diner and have poached eggs with smoked salmon and el Cubano respectively. Huge portions, so huge we can’t handle them completely, while around us everybody empties his or her plate. We are again picked up and back at the hotel it is time for a little nap.

Sunday morning August 28th after breakfast we decide to g for a ferry ride to Bremerton. The hotel shuttle takes us to the Washington State Ferry Terminal where we buy two senior return tickets for USD 8,20 total (very cheap for two boat trips of an hour each) through a beautiful area. The weather is nice, not as windy as yesterday and the sun tries to join us too. We cross Puget sound and meander between the islands and the inlets of Olympic Peninsula. Alki Point Lighthouse is very well visible. In Bremerton we have coffee and we look at Fountain Park in the garden of the Puget Sound Navy Museum. We buy two sandwiches to eat on the way back. Even Mount Rainier tries to push through the clouds. Coming back to Seattle gives a lovely skyline of the city, Today again three cruise ships in, Norwegian Pearl right in the city and Amsterdam (Holland America) and Ruby Princess at pier 91. Back at the hotel I wash some pants, dark shirts and socks in the coin laundry. That takes some time, but everything will be clean when we board the ship tomorrow.

In the next two weeks internet will be much slower and a lot more expensive than it was during this first part of our travel, so I will probably not post to many photo’s. We will continue however with much pleasure.

Enjoyed your post. The hotel sounded really accommodating with the shuttle service. I relived our trip to Seattle - we loved Pikes Place and going up in the Space Needle (such a great view). Sure hope the nice weather continues while you are on the cruise ship! Funny thing Alie, I was showing my Netherland album to a friend today (she loves flowers and loved it) and she said she thought you and I looked like sisters!

Dawn & Bernie
